A Man Sits In His Study With A Glass Of Cabernet.

A man sits in his study, a book in his hand and a fullĀ glass of inky Cabernet by his side.

There’s a sheepish knock at the door.

ā€œCome in,ā€ the man says without lifting his eyes from theĀ page.

The door creaks slowly and a young man, no more thanĀ 17 with his face long and his eyes wet and red, slipsĀ silently into the room.

His sock-muffled steps are barely whispers on theĀ wooden floor. ā€œDad?ā€ his voice weak and unsure:

ā€œcanĀ we talk?ā€

With his son standing by his side, his eyes are finallyĀ pulled from the page.

The anguish in his son’s voice is enough to tear himĀ from the fictitious world where he finds comfort andĀ respite.

ā€œOf course,ā€ he says, placing his bookmark and closingĀ the tome on his lap: ā€œwhat’s wrong?ā€

The boy chokes back a sob and gathers his thoughts,Ā his father waits patiently.

ā€œWhā€¦ā€ he clears his throat: ā€œWhy are girls so mean?ā€

A subtle smile contorts his father’s face and a gentleĀ nod says ā€œI knew this would come. Someday.ā€

His father breathes deep and stares at the velvetyĀ ripples across his favorite drink.

He reaches, and gently lifts the cup to his son. ā€œHave aĀ sup.ā€

The boy smells first, as his father does at dinner, thenĀ sips.

ā€œBleh!ā€ He exclaims: ā€œhow do you drink that!?ā€

The father chuckles and accepts the cup yet again.

Son, women are like wine.ā€

He takes another drink, slightly more than a sip.

ā€œLikeĀ this wine, the girls you are dating now are too young.

All of their off flavors haven’t had time to settle.

Their brash, even obnoxious, they insist uponĀ themselves and are unrefined.

Sure, they may get you to where you want to go, butĀ you’ll wake up regretting everything and feeling sick.ā€

The boy just nods.

As the wine ages, all those off flavors settle down, theĀ tannin’s soften and rough edges become soft andĀ welcoming.

The same wine, which would have given you aĀ headache if enjoyed too early, makes the perfect
partner for your dinner or just to be enjoyed on it’s own.ā€

ā€œThanks dad, I think….ā€

ā€œBut then, the wine continues to age,ā€ he continuesĀ cutting off the boy: ā€œand all of the fruit character thatĀ once defined it is lost.

The flavors become flabby and the alcohol turns toĀ vinegar.

Soon, all of the inside crystallizes leaving nothing but aĀ sour, bitter, acrid slurry that makes you want to vomit asĀ soon as it touches your lips.ā€

The father then downs the remainder of his wine in oneĀ loud gulp.

The boys stares horrified at his father:

ā€œWhen does that happen?ā€

ā€œI dunno,ā€ he says while pouring another glass.

ā€œHow old is your mother?ā€
