Be Extra Careful This Time

An elderly couple in Downeast Maine were sleeping one night when the old man suddenly woke up and realized something was wrong. He nudged his wife, but she didn’t move.

Panicking a little, he called his son and said,
“Son, I need you to come down and give me a hand… your mother’s gone.”

The son rushed over right away. Together, the two of them carefully lifted the old woman and started carrying her down the stairs.

Everything was going fine… until they reached the bottom.

Suddenly the son lost his grip for a second and bump! — her head hit the wooden newel post at the bottom of the stairs.

And unbelievably… she woke up.

She sat up, looked at both of them, and yelled,
“You two idiots! What do you think you’re doing?!”

Well, she survived just fine — but she never let them forget it. For the next two years, she reminded them constantly about the time they nearly “killed” her with that bump on the stairs.

Then one morning, two years later, the old man woke up and realized his wife had truly passed away this time.

So he called his son again.

“Son,” he said quietly, “I need you to come help me again… your mother’s gone.”

The son came over, and once again they lifted her and started carefully carrying her down the stairs.

They had just reached the top step when the old man suddenly said,

“Hang on a minute, son…”

The son stopped. “What is it, Dad?”

The old man leaned closer and whispered,

“Be **extra careful this time… and try not to bump her on that post again.” 😄
